"A grandmother is a babysitter who watches the kids instead of the television"
(Author Unknown)

Gramma is very passionate about nutrition. She takes pride in being able to give back to the volunteer organizations and groups that work to provide the best nutrition to children. She works closely with in school feeding programs to provide affordable and nutritious snacks for Kids in school.

Gramma Garrets is passionate about simple comfort food that is naturally sweetened and is peanut free. She hopes that her grandsons continue her work to build a company selling great tasting and healthy food.

Gramma is also aware that school wellness policies have the potential to combat childhood obesity by addressing goals for nutrition education, foods served on campus, and school-based activities. Gramma is working with food service and volunteer programs to get good food into schools at the best prices. In Ontario, Canada, starting September 2011, the regulating of the food and beverages sold in schools (PPM 150) goes into effect. The law is geared to ensure food sold to students (cafeterias, hot lunch programs, tuck shops, sport tournaments, in-school fundraisers) meets stringent nutritional guidelines. Gramma is very happy with this development as her snacks meet these guidelines.

Gramma knows that peanut and nut allergies account for over 80% of all food allergies. We the Gramma Garret Company are committed to increasing the awareness of peanut allergies and anaphylaxis at schools and encourage voluntary compliance of school peanut free policies. Schools have responded to requirements that outline the need to protect allergic kids at school by implementing complete peanut free and/or nut free policies. Some schools have instituted peanut free zones in the lunch rooms to address the needs of kids with allergies. Since January of 2006 an Ontario law requiring schools/school boards in Ontario to have policies or procedures in place to address anaphylaxis in schools, has been in place. That law includes directives for providing instruction to staff and guidance on the administration of medication. School boards can minimize the risk of anaphylaxis by adhering to the guideline provided. Gramma Garret’s applauds all efforts that keep allergic children safe in schools.

The Government of Canada, Healthy Canadians advisory site is a great resource for nutrition, tips for parents and all Canadians. The site also lists recalls and advisories. This is one of Gramma’s favourite sites for information.
